Home Improvement Skills Training

Recovery Community Development renovates the houses we acquire using licensed contractors, who are part of our staff, and with the help of some of our residents, who are part of our “Home Improvement Skills Training” program. We have been so blessed to have many of our supporting church partners and volunteers join us to help with demolition, painting and framing, and with outdoor work on our home renovations.

The idea behind having students and residents working alongside our contractors originated with the renovation of our first house on Pembroke Street in Bridgeport back in 2013.  This approach allowed participants in the program to gain valuable experience and to build skills in the areas of basic carpentry, framing, drywall installation, drywall prep, and painting.

In 2014, RCD started a lawn maintenance and light landscaping business under the direction of a licensed arborist, which provided students the opportunity to work and to earn a stipend. That business has since been “spun off” to one of the original students and now employs five people on a full-time basis.

Part of Recovery Community Development’s mission in offering these social enterprises is to equip our residents with basic skills they can use to find full-time jobs.  We are delighted to announce that we have our first trainee to enter the plumber apprentice program.

RCD Renovation Services

Under the direction of two licensed contractors, who are full-time employees of RCD, we currently do off-site renovation work in area homes and businesses, and we utilize our residents on a paid hourly basis to assist us whenever possible.
